For many autistic individuals,"fitting in" isn't a social choice - itโs a sophisticated, daily survival strategy called Masking.
It is the constant, exhausting effort to silence natural instincts, suppress sensory needs, and "script" every social interaction just to fit into a neurotypical mold. While masking can act as a shield against prejudice or exclusion, it comes with a steep "survival tax" that eventually comes due. It is a high-level cognitive process that feels like running a heavy software program on hardware that wasn't designed for it. It involves:
Social Scripting: pre-rehearsing conversations, preparing "safe" questions, and memorising facial expressions like lines in a play;
Sensory Suppression: forcing yourself to ignore the "painful" hum of a refrigerator or the scratch of a clothing tag so you don't appear "difficult";
The Manual Gaze: consciously calculating exactly how many seconds of eye contact are required to seem "engaged" without being "intense";
The Hidden Cost (Identity Erosion): as the boundary between the mask and the real person blurs, many face the ultimate cost of losing their identity in the process. When you spend every waking hour monitoring your "performance," you eventually stop asking "What do I want?" and start asking "What does the room expect?".
This leads to a profound sense of disconnection. You aren't just tired; you are becoming a stranger to yourself.
The survival tax is usually paid in the currency of mental health. Chronic masking is the primary driver of Autistic Burnout - a state of total systemic collapse where the brain simply loses the ability to perform the "manual override" anymore."
Masking is like being an expert actor in a play you never auditioned for, where everyone else has a script but you. Youโre doing a great job, but youโre exhausted because youโre the only one performing.
Strategies for Reclamation
If you find yourself drowning under the weight of your own mask, the goal isn't necessarily to "unmask" 100% of the time (which isn't always safe), but to manage the energy cost. Unmasking is a process of re-meeting yourself. It is an invitation to step into the space where your true personality lives - the one that isn't defined by how well it mimics someone else. The world might have told you to be quiet, but your authentic self has been keeping you alive this whole time. Itโs time to start listening to them.
