Becoming You

I often reflect with my clients about what truly makes us who we are. At the beginning of almost every personal journey - and rightly so - we are often too focused on blaming our circumstances for how our lives have turned out. In some respects, this isn't entirely wrong. A nurturing and caring environment, rich with the right stimuli, can have a tremendously positive impact on our emotional and physical development. On the contrary, the opposite experience is often a generator of mental chaos and emotional deprivation.
Yet, the life stories of people show the most varied outcomes. There is one truth that encompasses all of our stories: it all comes down to the way we react to what happens to us and the choices we make.
Once trauma has been unloaded and worked through, the goal of therapy - and indeed, of every personal journey - is to finally take charge and start moving toward the life we envision for ourselves. It's a long journey, but the simple act of making a mental shift and knowing you're heading toward the life you've imagined for yourself can be extremely powerful and freeing.
